amid-all of this in the world, today washington was consumed with two issues. the first was the start of negotiations to head off a deliberate crisis that d.c. created for itself so they could come to a few new deal between the parties and congress on spending and taxes and the deficit. that negotiation started today. the white house said top staffers will be continuing those negotiations that started today even while the president is off on this big historic trip to asia. the other thing consuming washington is the investigation into what happened in benghazi. in the midst of his sex scandal, but the head of the cia david petraeus testified to congress today about libya behind closed doors. we'll have more on that in a moment. but while all of this is unfolding in american politics, globally and in washington, there's a whole other level of things unfolding in american politics that's happening further down the food chain. what's happening there, i think, is rather off the hook. in a way that might be good news for the country. but for now, it's just worth see
